Social Promotion Social Promotion Most children are taught since the beginning of their educational careers that they must do well, and succeed if they wish to be acknowledged. There was always a black sheep, some boy or girl, who did not do their work and was held back. Consequently, these children were used as horrifying examples of what could happen. However, was the child really at fault for failing to complete grade requirements, or was the system in which they were taught in error? The evidence available demonstrates that children who were retained were not unintelligent, but that education policies were to blame. Although the human race has gone through stupendous scientific awakenings, it is suprising to see that the education policies practiced today are based on the reasonings of a dead age. It is certainly not because Americans do not value their children's educations but perhaps because we live in a country that is not always aware of significant aspects of our society, particularly education. Social promotion, in use nationally for at least 20 years , is an educational policy where students are advanced from grade to grade. There is no regard to their learning because it is a widely accepted notion that they learn better with their peers. "Studies show that it's better to promote an underachiever than keep them down," stated Peg Dawson from the National Association of School Psychologists. Yet, high profile protesters of this system include both United States President Bill Clinton and The American Federation of Teachers. In many cases, children are advanced repeatedly without knowing basic educational skills, and suffer greatly when in high school. These students' educational lives were drastically affected by their retention. The ills of these former policies are cleansed in a proposed new system. In this system, the promotion standards for grades are raised in order to insure that the students have learned all that is necessary to succeed in the next grade. Most often, students are retained when they do not pass promotion criteria at the end of first, sixth or seventh, and ninth grade. Student promotions are based on two major tests: performance on district wide math-assessment tests, and on their performance on reading-assessments. The reading tests are divided among grade levels: children in grades 5-11 must pass the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test while students in grades K-4 must perform well on the Developmental Reading Assessment Test. Students who fail to pass required tests under this new system must attend summer school. These students are given an opportunity to retake their tests and be promoted. Students who fail to pass their tests again are placed in accelerated study programs in an attempt to catch them up with their peers. These programs involve increased focus on reading and math, and extended learning time each day. Their school year is also lengthened to 11 months. Located in Washington state, Lake Washington International school enforces the new social promotion system of grade required tests and their state assessment results are excellent, compared to the Washington state average. You are the author of Who Will I Become, and the founder of the Growing Leaders Foundation. Can you tell us a bit about the book,  and its link to the foundation?The book, WHO WILL I BECOME, is a visual roadmap of the Foundation’s leadership work to  date. This first edition focuses on the Caribbean region where the Foundation started (my place  of birth). The 2nd edition will focus on the Middle East region. The photography and inspi ring  words are meant to incite storytelling between youths and adults as they explore instances  where the directed and thought provoking words may apply or could apply to their own lives,  past and future.The concept of the book has existed since 2010 when I created the Foundation. I wrote the  Love Letter to a Leader of Tomorrow back then, and it has never changed, meaning the entire  book is designed around this love letter we all deserve to receive in our lifetime.Books have always been my most reliable, consistent mentor. I wanted to create one that  could give the wisdom of generations to youths and adults who may have lost their way, from all  cultures. What impact has the book had so far on your foundation?I recently wrote an article about this in Arabian Business, i.e. a book being the new business  card. I think in the world we live in today, we are super keen to learn more about the texture of  others; their worldview, their value system, etc. It is for this reason that we have such a huge  infatuation with each other’s content through social media, blogs and all. There is no better way to transfer your knowledge, experiences and/or diverse content other than through a book. There is just something about a book that gives roots to what you need to say to the world, how  you feel, who you are and what you stand for. I think everyone is a biography and a book waiting to happen and if we live our lives knowing this... just imagine the possibilities for each  and every one of us.With regards to me personally, the fact that I am now a published author is rewarding on so  many levels. I say this  especially to those of us in the area of making this world a better place. You simply do not know how what you are doing or what you know can lift up another, give knowledge or inspire courage. In today’s publishing world, you can easily design, write and publish a book on your own. The traditional publishing way of needing an agent and a publisher has been turned on its head There are so many resources to help you do it right.I am now working on my second book, a 50,000+ word full manuscript which is very different  from my first book. To say it is hard, especially given I have no writing experience whatsoever,  would be an understatement. But I was really fortunate in that a publisher, Jaico Books, noticed  my work and approached me to write an adult audience leadership book. So I encourage you to  keep writing and putting your content out there in the world since you never know who may  notice.So you’re with a traditional publisher, but you still came to Reedsy to find an  independent editor to work with. What was the reason for that?Yes, normally a traditional publisher does all the editorial reviews for a book; especially if they  approached you to write it. In my case I came to Reedsy for three reasons.First I wanted a different persp ective on my book. My publisher is focused on the Indian market  but I want my book to have international appeal, so I was looking for diverse feedback.  Also, I have to admit I was a bit insecure about some of my writing. Before submitting some  chapters to my publisher, I chose to get a lot of help and feedback from my Reedsy editors. It was super affordable and I figured I had nothing to lose to get a next set of eyes on my work.I was very open to my publisher about having outside editors looking at my work. And they  actually noticed and complimented me on the huge difference in the chapters being submitted;  so it really worked out for me.Most importantly, my confidence is up and I have found my mojo and grit to keep writing away  to complete this second book within the next month so we can see it on bookshelves in 2017. He does not touch the shape of the work but he  cleans up the grammar so it all makes perfect sense i.e. he has been super helpful in clearing  up what I want to say without disturbing my work. He is also very professor- ­like and I almost feel  like I have a babysitter that keeps me writing.Maria is extremely different in that she confidently pokes holes in the work and makes  suggestions or asks questions. She causes you to wonder if the shape of your work is correct or  if it should be round or square in certain parts. She forces you to think through what you are  writing or meaning to say. This is super helpful to me since she adds light and allows air into the  work. I am saving a lot of her comments for my final manuscript where I will have the full  editorial review from my publisher. I have a feeling this is where I will get a full appreciation of  how brilliant Maria actually is. The product and market are is relatively new; therefore a plan for a successful development of the product needs to be implemented. The plan must give nokia the ability to achieve a high market share. Although they are the first company to engage this business but the main problem which they face is their inferiority in technology, secondly their switch size are large and the competitors on the other hand are making smaller chips. Most importantly size and shape of the mobile phones are not up to the choice of customers, moreover they need to focus on the design if they want to boost up their sales. Company is already going through a financial crisis and on the other hand competitors are providing financial solutions in order to damage nokia. Management needs to issue new shares in the market in order to level up with the market trend. So talking on a wide scale, in the developing market, nokia needs to enter the market with a proper plan up to the expectations of customers in order to enhance the career of the product. This can be done by adding new features, technology advancement and revising their policies again. Market penetration: For nokia this includes the current products in the current market, these include various radio and telephone equipments, including AXE switch. Company at the existing stage needs to expand their number of products and its features since the competitors on the other hand have moved towards smaller reliable equipments industry. â€Å"To Build a Fire† Theme Analysis Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! -New Testament: James 3:5 â€Å"To Build a Fire† is a short story written by Jack London. This story was originally published in 1902, with the famous version being published in 1908. When London was a student at the University of California, Berkeley, he had discovered the name of his biological father and wrote to him in an attempt to establish a relationship. His letter was returned with the man denying paternity. This denial negatively overwhelmed London, resulting in him dropping out of college and sailing to the Yukon in Canada to pursue the gold rush.This location had a profound impact on London and has resulted in his naturalist writing type. The Yukon has been the setting in many of his stories including â€Å"To Build a Fire. † This short story details a logger new to the Yukon Territory and his trek down a trail with his wolf dog. While walking down the trail, the man breaks through the ice and plunges shin deep into the frigid water. Knowing frostbite would set in, he is forced to take up camp and start a fire to dry off and warm up. His first fire is extinguished and he is unable to light a new one. London is able to support this theme with his use of setting, foreshadowing, and irony. This theme is confirmed by the published analysis â€Å"To Build a Fire† written by James Welsh, which was published in 2004. London’s detailed use of setting has the greatest influence in showcasing the theme of Man vs. Nature. This story takes place in the Yukon Territory of Canada where â€Å"There was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky† (London 127). His initial meticulous detailed setting of the trail and weather virtually puts the reader in the boots of the logger. He spat again. And again, in the air, before it could fall to the snow, the spittle crackled† (London 128). This explanation shows the extreme level of coldness that the man is being challenged with. This detail gives readers the ability to compare the cold that they are used to with the cold that he is facing. This adds to the impending fears that the reader feels, even though the man shrugs it off. This statement also details the isolation the man is facing when he mentions, â€Å"A foot of snow had fallen since the last sled had passed over† (London 128). This isolation sets the one man vs. ll of nature impending battle. The trail is also later described to include more of the possible dangers the man is against such as, â€Å"He knows the area and realizes the danger of springs hidden beneath the snow, covered only by a thin sheet of ice† (Welsh). This adds more dangers to an already dangerous hike. London’s detailed description of the setting showcases the merciless features of nature and places the environment as the antagonist against our inexperienced logger. When London isolates the character and combines the violent characteristics of the setting, he emphasizes the theme of Man vs. Nature.Foreshadowing is the literary device used to suggest certain plot events that might happen in the future. London is able to use foreshadowing to enlighten the readers into the possible traps the logger is facing all while building the suspense of the story. The human condition is explained by the logger as the, â€Å"frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man’s frailty in general, able to only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold† (London 128). This statement exposes the weakness of humans and gives the readers a glimpse of how the logger might face hardship due to weakness to temperature.Later in the story the dog’s manner changes and he develops a â€Å"menacing apprehension that subdued it and made it slink along at the man’s heels†¦ it wanted fire, or else to burrow under the snow† (London 129). This gives readers the feeling that the dog knows that the weather is too terrible to travel and an impending danger is present. Traveling down the tr ail, the dog breaks through the ice and is forced to lick the ice away to prevent frostbite foreshadowing that the man would be going through the same trials. Before the coming of winter, the old-timer from Sulpher Creek had warned him that one should always travel in winter with a partner and that one should never attempt to travel alone in temperatures colder than fifty degrees below zero. In his ignorance, the tenderfoot had laughed at the old-timer’s advice† (Welsh). This builds on the anticipation that the advice may become used later in the story. â€Å"Every time he comes on a suspected trap, he forces the dog to go ahead to see if it is safe† (Welsh). By putting the dog into harms way, it gives a sense of impending karma.Throughout the beginning and middle of the story, London uses foreshadowing to build the suspense and give readers a look at aspects of nature that may come to challenge the protagonist. Throughout the story, London uses irony to demonstr ate Man vs. Nature all while offering some dark comedy. When the man first decides to take a break and eat lunch he stops and builds his first successful fire. â€Å"The fire has restored his confidence, but the dog wants to stay by the warmth and safety of the fire† (Welsh). Looking back, one may see the irony of the knowledge level of the dog and understand how the man should have stayed with his fire.The man also shrugs off frostbite earlier in the story as â€Å"a bit painful, but never serious† (London 129). Readers are more aware than the traveler that frostbite can kill and the traveler eventually finds this out. Throughout the story the man was extremely careful and he eventually breaks through the ice â€Å"At a place where there were no signs, where the soft, unbroken snow seemed to advertise solidity beneath† (London 131). The man then has to build a fire to dry his feet so frostbite doesn’t set in. He decides to build the fire underneath a tre e so that he has fuel readily available and protection for the fire.This idea backfires and snow from atop the tree falls and extinguishes the fire. When a reader examines the mannerisms of the dog, he or she may see that he has a better understanding of the weather and environment. He wants to set up camp instead of travel. â€Å"The dog did not want to go. It hung back until the man shoved it forward† (London 130). The irony being the dog is smarter than the man. London uses these examples of irony to better describe the merciless personality of the setting and add dark humor in an otherwise depressing story. An ironic strain that runs throughout the story is the tenderfoot’s sense of superiority and contempt for the old trapper on Sulphur Creek. The irony is dramatic in that the reader soon realizes that the old man was right, a realization that escapes the tenderfoot until the very end of the story† (Welsh). Jack London’s â€Å"To Build a Fire† is an image provoking heart-pounding story and his use of setting, irony and foreshadowing perfectly exemplifies the Man vs. Nature theme. This theme has been also noted in many published literary works such as James Welsh’s analysis.London’s level of detail and ability to place you in the situation makes this story one that will remain a classic for years to come. Introduction The goal of this study was to investigate the role of sleep in the regulation of emotional reactivity and mood, and in particular the role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The research team led by Rosales-Lagarde measured the impact of total sleep deprivation (TSD) by evaluating subjective responses to frustration and aversive stimuli. It was found that coping skills and emotional regulatory abilities were decreased along with decision-making skills following REM sleep disturbances. It was also found that the subjects that experienced disturbances in REM sleep displayed a greater degree of impulsiveness when faced with a risky decision and favored utilitarian judgments. The data was collected using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) imaging of the brain during the various stages of the experiment, and during the administration of the Emotional Reactivity Task. It was found that there is a greater and longer lasting activation of the amygdala while viewing negative stimul i, and specifically following TSD. This study was based on previous research that suggests that REM sleep plays a significant role in emotional regulation, as brain areas associated with emotion are specifically activated during REM sleep cycles.
